Sebadoh
Sebadoh is an indie rock band formed in Westfield, Massachusetts by Eric Gaffney and Dinosaur Jr bass player Lou Barlow.
Along with such bands as Pavement and Guided by Voices, Sebadoh helped pioneer lo-fi music, a style of indie rock characterized by low-fidelity recording techniques, often on four-track machines. The band's early output, such as 1990's Weed Forestin' and 1991's Sebadoh III, was typical of this style, and wavered between Barlow's wry, introspective folk and Gaffney's psychedelic noise-rock experiments.

The Sea and Cake
The Sea and Cake is a pop/rock group with a pronounced jazz influence, which formed in the mid-90s in Chicago, Illinois out of the ashes of renowned local bands The Coctails and Shrimp Boat.
The group's name came from a willful reinterpretation (in the wake of an accidental miscomprehension) of "The C in Cake", a song by Gastr del Sol. Along with Shrimp Boat and The Coctails, groups related to The Sea and Cake include Tortoise and Gastr del Sol. Starting with 1997's The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire essentially plays only drums in The Sea and Cake. Members Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt each have released solo albums. The cover art of The Sea And Cake's releases are largely paintings by Eric Claridge and photographs by Prekop. (Postcards of some of the One Bedroom-era photos were sold on the band's 2003 tour.) Prewitt has been involved in publishing his own comic books and doing graphic design. The band was on hiatus from 2004 to 2007, returning with Everybody. The band's most recent album, Car Alarm, was released in October 2008.

Ringside
Ringside is an indie rock band from Hollywood, California. The band consists of Scott Thomas and actor Balthazar Getty, who fuse indie rock with electronic beats.
Their debut album Ringside was released on April 19, 2005 under Fred Durst's label Flawless Records and Geffen Records, with single "Tired of Being Sorry" achieving moderate success. The song was later covered by Singer/songwriter Enrique Iglesias of his eighth album Insomniac and was released as a single in Europe. The song "Struggle" from their self-titled album was featured on a Pontiac Torrent commercial, the movie Doom and on the TV series Six Feet Under. The track also appeared briefly on the ambient play list of the Schecter Guitars website, as Schecter promotes artists that use their guitars. After some speculation, Getty confirmed that he and Thomas were finishing a second album when he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on October 9, 2007. He went on to say that they were "mixing the record right now and it'll be out in the new year".

Razorlight
Razorlight are an Anglo-Swedish indie rock band formed in 2002. They are primarily known in their home countries, having topped the charts with the 2006 single America and its parent self-titled album, their second.
At the beginning of their career Johnny Borrell's new outfit began by supporting The Libertines at various venues (including 333 in Old Street) where a young A&R scout, Justin Cross, found them and put them in Liam Watson's Toerag Studios where he produced the tracks "Rip It Up", "Rock 'n' Roll Lies" and "In The City" alongside John Fortis. Off the back of these tracks the band (now named Razorlight) began getting serious A&R heat due to the songs' success on radio stations such as John Kennedy Show on XFM.

Ra Ra Riot
Ra Ra Riot is an American indie rock band from Syracuse, New York, consisting of vocalist Wes Miles, bassist Mathieu Santos, guitarist Milo Bonacci, cellist Alexandra Lawn, violinist Rebecca Zeller, and drummer Gabriel Duquette.
Ra Ra Riot formed in 2006, playing at houses and venues around the Syracuse University campus. The band started to attract attention due to their energetic live shows, enough to gain an appearance at the CMJ Music Marathon, fewer than six months after their formation. Following this appearance, their live show received the first of several favorable reviews from SPIN.com, who called them "one of the best young bands we've heard in a really long time". They went on to open for Art Brut and Bow Wow Wow in New York City, toured the UK twice on their own, then returned, opening for the Editors (footage of which can be found on Crackle); they also toured North America supporting Tokyo Police Club. Their first solo headlining tour of the U.S. was completed in 2007, and in early 2008, they embarked on a second. The band was also invited to play the Iceland Airwaves Festival, in Reykjavík, Iceland. They have recorded three sessions on the national online radio station WOXY and two for the acclaimed Daytrotter sessions at Futureappletree studio 1 in Rock Island, Illinois. In 2007, they made their first appearance at South by Southwest and headlined a show at the South Street Music Festival in New York City. The band returned to appear again at the South by Southwest Music Conference in March 2008. After a show in Providence, the band's original drummer, John Ryan Pike, of Hamilton, Massachusetts, went missing in the early morning of June 2, 2007 at Wilbur's Point in Fairhaven. His body was discovered the following day in nearby Buzzards Bay; Pike was believed to have drowned. Ra Ra Riot issued a statement a few weeks after Pike's funeral that they would continue as a band. In the winter of 2007, the band signed to major label V2 Records. To celebrate their new label deal, Ra Ra Riot released "Dying Is Fine" and "Each Year (RAC Mix)" on 7" vinyl as an A/B single. In December 2007, the band announced that they had finished recording new songs for their debut LP. During their show in Cambridge, MA on April 25, 2008, the band announced their new album "would be released in August. If not August then September" 2008. On May 19, 2008, the band announced that they had signed to Barsuk Records. Their debut album The Rhumb Line was released on August 19, 2008 in the United States and Canada. It was released in Europe via V2/Cooperative Music on September 22, 2008. On November 22, 2008, they finished their European tour with Vampire Weekend and Los Campesinos! They are currently on their North American Tour with Death Cab for Cutie & Cold War Kids until July 31, 2009.

In 2001, Preston School of Industry released All This Sounds Gas. The band released its second album, Monsoon, in 2004, with studio contributions from members of The Minus 5 and Wilco. Preston School of Industry went inactive after their September 2004 Australian tour, though Kannberg revealed in late 2006 he had been slowly working on a record: "Don't know when it's going to be released. Just taking my time, nothing special. I've got the songs, I just haven't figured out how I want to do it yet. This winter, I'll probably get it done."

Piano Magic
Piano Magic is a musical collective formed in the summer of 1996 by Glen Johnson, Dominic Chennell, and Dick Rance in London, England. Their sound has been described as ambient pop, post-rock, indietronica.
While the most recent releases have seen them operating with a traditional band format, they originally started their career with the intention to base their recordings around their small nucleus and whoever else would like to contribute. Glen Johnson is the only remaining band member from the original trio. Piano Magic was formed in the summer of 1996 by Glen Johnson, Dominic Chennell, and Dick Rance in London, England, as a 'bedroom-studio' project with the intention to base their recordings around their small nucleus and whomever else would like to contribute. Originally reluctant to perform live, they gave way to label pressure when their first single proved popular on BBC Radio 1 John Peel show & was awarded Single of the Week in Melody Maker. While recruiting Paul Tornbohm to play drums at these gigs, they pointedly refused to play or sound like any of their released material. Popular Mechanics appeared on i/Ché in 1997, a debut album which the press variously described as "ethereal electro pop atmospheric soundscapes" or "simply delighting in... making silly noises" & which the band thought of as "Small Beat, pre-chip... radiophonics". It included vocals by Hazel Burfitt and Raechel Leigh but, with Rance having quit the band, combined two previous single releases with a set of new recordings by Johnson and Chennell. The duo then briefly recruited American music students, Alexander Perls, Jen Adam and Ezra Feinberg to complete the band, though Chennell too had departed by the time of the second album release Low Birth Weight in 1998, a record described as "dreamy, trance and organic psychedelia". It introduced the vocals of Caroline Potter who would sing on one further album.

Phoenix
Phoenix is a French alternative rock band started during their childhood by Thomas Mars, Deck D'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz in the affluent suburb of Versailles, in the same culture that produced late-'90s bands such as Air and Daft Punk.
Phoenix started as the backing band for a remix of Air's "Kelly Watch the Stars" single. Soon after, Phoenix released their 2000 debut album United. The name Phoenix was officially chosen in 1996 when Laurent Brancowitz permanently joined the band after the end of the short-lived band Darlin' he formed with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, who eventually became Daft Punk.

Peter Bjorn & John
Peter Bjorn and John is a Swedish indie rock band, formed in Stockholm in 1999 and named after the first names of the band's current members: Peter Morén (vocals, guitar and harmonica), Björn Yttling (bass guitar, keyboards and vocals) and John Eriksson (drums, percussion and vocals).
They are best known for the 2006 single "Young Folks", which featured Victoria Bergsman, formerly of The Concretes, & was a top 20 hit in the UK Singles Chart. The hit was featured in the 2008 motion picture 21. It was also named NME's second-best track of 2006, beaten only by "Over and Over" by Hot Chip. In Australia it was voted number 16 in the annual Triple J Hottest 100 for 2006. Morén and Yttling began playing music together while at high school. They shared an interest in bands such as The Stone Roses and Ride. They are influenced by, but not interested in replicating, classic '60s baroque pop, power pop and new wave. Their first band disbanded after they moved to Stockholm, where they met Eriksson in 1999 to form Peter, Björn and John. Their first gig was an unsuccessful one aboard a boat in Stockholm. Their expectations were not high from the start, as they "just wanted to make good music for their own amusement". Lars Skoglund of the band Laakso has filled in for the band on drums and played bongos during some live shows. The video to their song "Young Folks" was animated and directed by Ted Malmros from Shout Out Louds. Morén has recorded a solo album, The Last Tycoon, released April 8, 2008. Kanye West has sampled the song in his version of "Young Folks" from his mixtape album, Can't Tell Me Nothing. Peter, Bjorn and John also recently collaborated with Canadian-born Actor and Hip Hop star Drake on his 2009 mixtape, So Far Gone, on the song "Lets Call It Off"
The band released their most recent album, Living Thing, on 31 March 2009.

People In Planes
People in Planes are a five piece Indie rock band from Cardiff, Wales. They are signed to Wind-up Records. Prior to 2003 they were known as Tetra Splendour (during which time they moved to Cardiff from their original hometown of Porthcawl) and before that (circa 2000) they went by the name of Robots in the Sky.
The current name is derived from the band's obsession with travelling (flying in particular this is also present in song titles and lyrics of their début album as Tetra Splendour). After being dropped by EMI, the band recorded a new album at Wales' Monnow Valley Studio, containing new songs (with newly-hired keyboard player Ian Russell) and unreleased Tetra Splendour material. In 2005, they released their first single under the name People in Planes "Talking Heads" (another limited release, being made in a batch of 1,000). The single featured two unreleased Tetra Splendour tracks as B-sides (and being accompanied by a music video, which again received limited airplay). Talking Heads which has since been renamed to "If You Talk Too Much (My Head Will Explode)", a line from the song's chorus (a decision Wind-Up made to make the songs more recognizable on the radio) has since had a new video made, shot in an airport, that was directed by actor Joaquin Phoenix. It is also scheduled for re-release as a single. At the 2005 South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, the band met Jeff Klein, with whom they would later tour in June 2005. Shortly after their South By Southwest appearance they were approached by Wind Up Records and in May, the band signed a deal with them. Their debut album, As Far as the Eye Can See... (which has been the speculative title from as early as 2003), was released on March 28, 2006. The single "If You Talk Too Much (My Head Will Explode)" reached #33 on the U.S. Billboard Modern Rock chart. The band toured the United States, opening for Blue October in 2006. The band also features on the soundtrack for the 2006 film John Tucker Must Die (and were also given a cameo in the film itself). On June 23, 2008 at Trash in Brooklyn, NY, People In Planes mentioned that they had become residents of New York City and were working on getting the correct documentation to make it official. They announced the winner of their cover contest as well and played a rendition of Hall & Oates' song "Maneater."

Pedro The Lion
Pedro the Lion was an indie rock band from Seattle, Washington, and, for over a decade, the main creative outlet of singer/songwriter David Bazan. The band combined a biting wit with first person narrative to cover both politics and faith.
Biography
Pedro the Lion was formed by David Bazan in 1995 & released its debut EP Whole in April 1997. Throughout the band's many lineup changes, Bazan remained the primary artist and musician behind the group, singing and playing virtually every instrument on the band's first two full length albums, It's Hard to Find a Friend (1998) and Winners Never Quit (2000). Seldom's Casey Foubert joined Bazan for the band's 2002 effort, Control, playing drums and keyboards and co-writing "Penetration" and "Second Best". Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie was a touring member as well, among many others. Achilles Heel followed in 2004 and featured T.W. Walsh, perhaps the only other individual besides Bazan to ever be considered an official band member. All told, the band released four full-length albums as well as several EPs and various 7" singles. Throughout his career, Bazan has been involved with such musical acts as Damien Jurado, Scientific, The Six Parts Seven, The Soft Drugs, Seldom, and Unwed Sailor. He, TW Walsh, and Frank Lenz of Starflyer 59, comprised the band Headphones during the time that the band's debut and only LP was recorded. TW later left the band for personal reasons after a tour on which he handled drum duties. Nick Peterson filled in on drums for the remaining Headphones live shows. David has said that he is not sure if there will be another Headphones album or not, but there are no plans for one at the moment. In early January 2006, Pedro the Lion formally announced that they had split. The split was amicable; Bazan and Walsh continue to be good friends. Bazan said that their friendship has even been strengthened by the breakup. Bazan toured in support of Fewer Moving Parts, his solo debut EP. His first full length album is in the works for 2008. Walsh returned to his career as a Web application developer & is busy with his band, The Soft Drugs, and their debut release, In Moderation. Pedro The Lion was managed by Bob Andrews at Undertow Music. David Bazan is expected to release his debut solo LP on Seattle-based Barsuk Records in 2009.

Pavement was an American indie rock band in the 1990s. Although they experienced only moderate commercial success, they achieved a significant cult following & were one of the more popular and influential lo-fi rock bands of the 1990s.
The group remained signed to an independent label throughout their entire career. Pavement formed in Stockton, California in 1989 as a studio project of guitarists and vocalists Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg, known originally only as "S.M." and "Spiral Stairs", respectively. Their debut EPs were extremely lo-fi releases titled Slay Tracks (1933-1969), Demolition Plot J-7, and Perfect Sound Forever. They were recorded at Louder Than You Think, the home studio of Stockton local and former hippie Gary Young who also played drums on the recordings. Upon first hearing the duo's songs, Young was quoted as saying, "this Malkmus idiot is a complete songwriting genius". After the release of Slay Tracks, a new drummer, Jason Fawkes, was drafted to replace Young both live and in the studio. However, after just one tour and a handful of recording sessions, when it became apparent Fawkes and Malkmus did not get along well, Fawkes was soon ousted and Young reinstalled. Pavement's most obvious influence during this time was English rock band The Fall, although Kannberg stated in a 1992 interview that he preferred The Replacements to The Fall. The Fall's primary member, Mark E. Smith, would often angrily claim through the years that Pavement was a "rip-off" of his band & that they didn't "have an original idea in their heads". However, some of the other members of The Fall have been quoted as saying they liked the band. Around 1992 Pavement became a full-time band, with the addition of bassist Mark Ibold who had been one of the band's first fans—and extra percussionist Bob Nastanovich to help Young keep time. Their debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, was released commercially in 1992 after copies had been circulated on cassette tape for nearly a year. Though the percussive influence of The Fall was still pervasive (as was that of English post-punk band Swell Maps), many of the songs also exhibited a strong sense of melody. The following year, the band released the EP Watery, Domestic, which represented a balance between their earlier and later styles.

Okkervil River
Okkervil River is an indie folk band from Austin, Texas. Formed in 1998, the band takes its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya. They self-released their first album, Stars Too Small to Use, which led them to the South by Southwest music festival.
After recording their first album in a garage, they signed with Jagjaguwar. Okkervil River continued by releasing four more albums, including critically lauded concept album Black Sheep Boy. After a period of touring for Black Sheep Boy, Okkervil River followed up with The Stage Names. The album sold 10,000 in its opening week in the United States. The group released a free covers album, Golden Opportunities Mixtape from their live performances. The band has garnered positive critical reception. Especially noted are each song's lyrics, intricate instrumentation, and thematic albums. In addition, they were recently featured on the talk show Late Night with Conan O'Brien and have performed with high profile bands such as The Decemberists, The New Pornographers, and Lou Reed. Okkervil River released their most recent album The Stand Ins on September 9th, 2008. They are promoting the release with a series of cover songs from the album on YouTube by people they've met as a band.
Formation
Okkervil River's founding members became friends in high school in Meriden, New Hampshire, and after parting ways for college moved to Austin, Texas to live together and start a band. The band consisted of singer-songwriter Will Sheff, Zach Thomas on bass and mandolin, and Seth Warren on drums. Their first gig was at Steamboat in Austin on January 11, 1999.

The Notwist
The Notwist are a German indie rock band. Formed in 1989, the band moved through several musical incarnations despite maintaining a relatively stable lineup. While their early records moved through heavy metal into dark indie rock,
Their recent efforts for which they've received the most attention have been very strongly influenced by the electronica scene, along with the other groups on the record label Morr Music.
The two Achers and Messerschmid formed the group in 1989 in Weilheim, near Munich. In 1990 they recorded their self-titled debut, a grunge-metal oriented LP. 1992 saw the release of Nook, which has an indie rock sound, while their 1995 album 12 contains their first flirtation with electronics. Martin Gretschmann joined the group in 1997. Shrink, released in 1998, is a jazz-electro-rock album. In 1998 Cynthia Dall did the vocals for a remix of "Torture Day" by The Notwist. The album Neon Golden (released in 2002) put them on the map for American listeners, with its heartfelt sentiment and more pop-oriented sound. The group has been remixed by Four Tet, Caribou, Console, Loopspool, Panda Bear and others. Singer Markus Acher collaborated with anticon. rapper/producer Alias on the song "Unseen Sights," an effort that shows a surprising musical breadth for both artists. The Notwist recently formed a group with Themselves named 13 & God, whose eponymous debut was released in 2005. Markus Acher, in addition to his work with The Notwist and 13 & God, also works with the band Lali Puna, while Mecki Messerschmidt now also plays drums for the recently reformed Schweisser. Michael Acher composes and programs for Ms. John Soda.

New Pornographers
The New Pornographers is a Canadian/American indie rock supergroup formed in 1997 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Their music is often described as power pop, with several critics likening their sound to that of Cheap Trick.
Carl Newman, who writes most of the band's material, has said, "When I seriously started to try to write songs, my main influences were, like, Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, and Brian Wilson. Those were the guys I kinda looked at their music and went, 'What the hell are they doing here?' I was just fascinated by the structures and the harmonics." Many of Newman's own songs have a similar harmonic complexity. For instance, the titular songs of the band's first two albums use at least six distinct major chords each, suggesting two or three different keys. The melody of the second of those songs, "The Electric Version", begins with an arpeggiated diminished triad a rare opening flourish for a pop song. The band's first three albums each ranked in the top 40 on The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop year end poll of hundreds of music reviewers. From 2000 to 2006, either a New Pornographers' album or a solo album from one of the band's members ranked in the top 40 on the list each year. In 2007, Blender magazine ranked The New Pornographers' first album, Mass Romantic, the 24th best indie album of all time. It is the second-highest Canadian album on the list, behind Arcade Fire's Funeral (which came in sixth). The name of the band was chosen by Newman, who has said that he came up with it after watching a Japanese film called The Pornographers. Many critics, however, have assumed that the name was a reference to Jimmy Swaggart's reputed claim that rock and roll was "the new pornography." The band has released four albums to date: Mass Romantic (2000), Electric Version (2003), Twin Cinema (2005), and Challengers (2007). A live album recorded on their 2006 tour is available only at concerts and on the band's website. In 2008 they contributed a t-shirt design for the Yellow Bird Project to raise money for the ALS Society of BC.

Neil Halstead
Neil Halstead (born October 7, 1970 in Luton, England) is a songwriter and musician. He was a founding member of Slowdive, a band often associated with the shoegazer musical genre.
Following the disbanding of Slowdive, some members of Slowdive (including longtime friend and musical collaborator Rachel Goswell) formed Mojave 3. Mojave 3 are stylistically distinct from Slowdive and may be regarded as British country/folk. Halstead is the principal singer and songwriter in Mojave 3 and also plays guitar. In 2002, 4AD released his debut solo album, Sleeping on Roads. Following his departure from 4AD, a second solo album, Oh! Mighty Engine was released by Brushfire Records on July 29, 2008. He has said of his solo work that it's "really good doing something on my own" having been in Slowdive then Mojave 3 since he was 17 years old.
