Scissor Sisters

The Scissor Sisters is a Grammy Award-nominated American band that formed in 2001. Their style draws from disco, glam rock, pop and the club scene of New York City.

The group was named after a sex position between two women (tribadism). While experiencing only limited mainstream success in the United States, the band has been hugely successful in Europe, Canada, Australia, and particularly in the UK, where they have achieved a number of chart hits, as well as their debut album becoming the best-selling album of 2004 in that country. Their single "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" was the fourth best-selling single in the UK in 2006 and stayed in the UK top 40 for 27 weeks.

Queen of Japan

Queen of Japan is a music trio from Europe, known for its synthpop sound and cover versions of hits from the 1970s and 1980s.

Queen of Japan's 1999 debut EP Mercury Rising (a reference to Freddie Mercury) features New Wave-sounding versions of Queen songs and is probably the basis for the group's name. The trio's versions of "I Love Rock N Roll" and "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" (originally hits for Joan Jett and Rod Stewart, respectively) appear on several different compilation CDs. Their version of "I Was Made For Loving You" (a hit for KISS) was featured on the award-winning short movie Icicle melt starring Greta Scacchi. Some of their cover songs, such as "Mother" (written and originally recorded by John Lennon) and "Wanted Man" (written by Bob Dylan for Johnny Cash) infuse an electronic sound into songs which previously had a different style. They have also covered songs by Soft Cell, The Who, Olivia Newton-John, Marvin Gaye, Duran Duran, Thin Lizzy, Klaus Nomi and Frank Zappa. Remixes of Queen of Japan's work have appeared on a CD by DJ Keoki. Their music has also been featured at Fashion Week and appears on two CDs of music thereof.
Discography
Queen of Japan's music is mostly available via European independent record labels. Some of their work was originally released on vinyl records (facilitating their use in dance mixes through traditional, non-digital DJ-ing methods) but were later released as compact disks.

Nickel Eye

Nickel Eye is the solo project of The Strokes' bassist Nikolai Fraiture. The band consists of Nikolai Fraiture (guitar, vocals, electric bass, double bass, harmonica), Joel Cadbury (steel guitar), Jamie McDonald (guitar), Brett Shaw (drums).

When The Strokes’ hiatus began taking longer than expected, Nikolai reached into an old shoebox of poems and rants written years ago. With his free time, he began adapting them to music. Enlisting the help of South, a UK band introduced to him by a friend, Nickel Eye recorded some demos at South Studios in Hackney, London. With some guest appearances by Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Regina Spektor, The Time of the Assassins was completed a few months later in New York City. Due to the recent regrouping of the Strokes to focus on a new album, Nickel Eye has been placed on the back burner. However, Fraiture expresses deep desire to continue where he left off when he can.
The Time Of The Assassins
Nickel Eye's debut album, The Time Of The Assassins, released on January 27 via Rykodisc, is a "pretty stripped down" collection of guitar, bass, drums, and a touch of mellotron. The album is written and produced by Nikolai. It is musically inspired by some of his favourite artists, such as Neil Young, Frank Black, Leonard Cohen and The Kinks. The artwork is reminiscent of Lynd Ward’s Gods’ Man, a collection of woodcuts considered to be one of the first graphic novels. The lyrics and theme for The Time of the Assassins found their impetus during a road trip across the United States of America when Nikolai was nineteen

New Wet Kojak

Welcome to the world of the New Wet Kojak of Love, & this is the Love version. Sleaze-rock, perverse jazz.
Music to sip martinis in a bubble bath of love to, and from, their hearts & just listen of love to the drenched sax on "You Got Some Dog" or the sonic flash of guitars on "Unbuckled" or the sickening beat of love on the opening track "Stick out your tongue" (lovesong of love for the nine-tees). You might say they ripped off Michael Jackson of love's characteristic yelp on "Sexy Postcard", might suspect copyright of love infringement on the sound of Serge Gainsbo [sic if love] and you would not be half wrong.
But the question of love that we would then pose to you is: do you really want to be right? Because this is the New Wet Kojak, and it is so smooth, it is disturbing. New Wet Kojak is a band, not a project. Its membership consists of Scott McCloud (drums, vox, 4-string acoustic deluxe guitar) & Johnny Temple (bass rigging, some guitar and back vox), both of Girls Against Boys, usually accompanied by Charles Bennington (sax-o-pho-neo) & Geoff Turner (3 and Gray Matter) (electric guitar).
The album was recorded in the New Wet Kojak style, in which the drums and the bass are laid down, and then the tapes are lost. Most of the other musicians were blindfolded and taken to WGNS studios in Washington, DC for midnight rendezvous with Charles and Geoff. New Wet Kojak was first conceived in Amsterdam, July 1992, but they keep a low profile (very low), recording in Chicago and DC, and this is the first full-length of love new wet record... It is music to be murdered to, or something else. It is definitely something else, and New Wet Kojak would also like to say to Elvis Costello, who recently released a record with "Kojak" in the silly title, that he should not have done that, but we (they) do not care because it will only sell more records for New Wet Kojak, and search the world as you may, we believe you will not find a newer wetter band or sound in this sweet world over.

Morcheeba

Morcheeba are a British band that mixes influences from trip hop, rock, rhythm and blues and pop. Their most popular albums include debut Who Can You Trust? and Big Calm. They are primarily known for the single "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" . The group released their sixth studio album Dive Deep in February 2008.

The group has sold around 6 million copies of their albums worldwide. Sometime in the mid-1990s, the Godfrey brothers (DJ Paul Godfrey and multi-instrumentalist Ross Godfrey) recruited Skye Edwards as vocalist, during a chance meeting at a party in which both brothers were introduced to Skye. This led to formation of Morcheeba. Five albums later in 2003, Edwards was asked to leave the band by the Godfrey Brothers. In 2005 they recorded another album, The Antidote, and recruited Daisy Martey (formerly of the band Noonday Underground) to replace Edwards on vocals. Martey was fired from the band in 2005. Later, the Godfrey brothers replaced Martey with another singer - Jody Sternberg - for their live performances, but their tour in support of Dive Deep was with French singer, Manda, on lead vocals. Their lastest studio album Dive Deep was released in February 2008 in Europe and the UK. This album, produced by Paul and Ross Godfrey, featured several guest vocalists including Judie Tzuke, Thomas Dybdahl, Cool Calm Pete, and Manda.

Monaco

Monaco was a side project of New Order bassist Peter Hook. Together with David Potts, the only remaining member of Revenge, the band was formed in 1995. The group is best known for the 1997 single "What Do You Want From Me?" and the album from which it was taken, Music for Pleasure, which sold over half a million copies.

Resemblance to New Order
Because New Order was on hiatus during the mid-90s, Monaco was able to find success partly because they made music similar to that of New Order. This similarity of sound derives from the fact that their music were in the dance-rock-pop genre, just as was New Order's music; Hook carried over his recognizable style of playing melody high up on the bass; Potts' vocal timbre and delivery sometimes resembled that of New Order's vocalist Bernard Sumner.
Follow-up album fails
In 1999, Polydor Records rejected Monaco's follow up album, the self-titled Monaco, due to the radically changing trends in music at the time in a money saving move reducing their artists to the more popular music. Papillon Records agreed to pick up the album, though the planned single release of "I've Got A Feeling" was recalled in the UK due to sample clearance issues. Despite favorable reviews, the album was released with almost no promotion at all; it is now sought after as a collector's item and fetches fairly high prices on sites like Amazon.com and eBay.
Break-up
In 2000, tensions mounted in the studio, partly due Potts' dissatisfaction with the band's failure to depart from a New Order-like sound, and partly due to Potts' workload. Following what Potts called "a disastrous gig" at the Eclipse festival, Hook and Potts had a major argument. They both took a break, and after letting things cool down, they met and decided it was best to split up Monaco. Potts eventually went on to form RAM and has been nurturing a solo career; meanwhile Hook reunited with New Order, playing with them until 2007, and formed Freebass in 2007.
After the success of the Revenge reissues in 2005, Hook announced that he and Potts were working on similar Monaco reissues for release sometime in 2007. This did not materialise. In March 2008, Hook and Potts performed Monaco songs together at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manchester under the name "Hooky & Pottsy". Original Monaco drummer Paul Kehoe also played along with Hook's son Jack. In October 2008, the same line up performed again as Monaco at the Ritz in Manchester which raised money for Oxfam.

Lucious Jackson

Luscious Jackson is an alternative/pop-rock group formed in 1991. They are named after now-retired American basketball player Lucious Jackson, whose name was mispronounced "luscious" during a sportscast.

The original band consisted of Jill Cunniff (vocals, bass), Gabby Glaser (vocals, guitar), Kate Schellenbach (drums) and Vivian Trimble (keyboards, vocals). The band played nearly every instrument heard on their records, and with the exception of a few non-LP cover songs wrote all of their own material, the majority penned by vocalists Jill Cunniff and/or Gabby Glaser. Between 1993 and 2000 they released one EP, three full length LPs and ten singles on the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal record label. Their biggest hit & only Billboard Top 40 entry is "Naked Eye" (#36, March 22, 1997). Other notable singles include "Here", "CitySong (NY State Of The World)", "Under Your Skin" and "Ladyfingers". Vivian Trimble left the group in 1998, and in 2000 (after releasing one album as a trio) the group officially announced the break up of Luscious Jackson. February 2007 saw the release of Luscious Jackson's "greatest hits" compilation, and in the Fall of 2006 the band announced that they have reunited and are to begin work on a new children's album.

Kat Onoma

The French ensemble of Kat Onoma were nearly veterans in their homeland before their everywhere instrumentals and abstract vocals hit American shores. The band’s name, which translates to “like our name says,” debuted in the states with a 2001 self-titled album. The release was produced by U.K.’s, Ian Caple, who had previously worked with Tricky and also the Tendersticks. With Caple on board the album lead the group into a balanced sound of riffing guitars from member Rodolphe Burger and electronic drums weighed with Phillipe Poirier’s deep, moody vocals. The album also marked a return by Burger and Poirier to the group after taking time off to work on solo projects.

Jonathan Johansson

Jonathan Johansson is the new pop sensation from Sweden. There might be two families of songs : the ones you wanna dance on and the other ones. En hand I Himlen is a little bit special : it can belong to both categories.

This is the kind of song you can dance on in a dark basement club, at 5am, when spirits have been phagocytosed your spirit.

Gruff Rhys

Gruff Rhys born 18 July 1970 in Haverfordwest) is a Welsh musician, performing solo & with several bands, including the Super Furry Animals who obtained mainstream success in the 1990s. He also most recently formed the electropop outfit Neon Neon with DJ Boom Bip. Their album Stainless Style was nominated for the 2008 Mercury prize.

He was schooled at Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen, Bethesda, Gwynedd, North Wales and was awarded a degree in art at Manchester Metropolitan University.
When Ffa Coffi Pawb disbanded in 1993, Rhys and drummer Dafydd Ieuan, of Rhoscefnhir, Anglesey, who had played for Catatonia, Anhrefn, Hanner Pei and many other Welsh language bands, formed the basis of the Super Furry Animals. They soon settled on a line up consisting of Rhys on vocals and guitar, Ieuan on drums, his brother Cian Ciaran (formerly of WWZZ) on keyboards, Huw Bunford (formerly of U-Thant) on guitar and Guto Pryce on bass. This line up has remained constant to the present day, although the role of each member has become more flexible, particularly in the studio.
In 1995, following a couple of largely Welsh language EPs on the Ankst label, they signed to Creation Records. Apparently, when offering them the deal after a gig, Alan McGee, head of Creation, asked that they sing more songs in English. Rhys pointed out that all the songs that night had been in English. The Super Furries went on to release of their critically acclaimed first album, Fuzzy Logic, in 1996 the first time Rhys had recorded in English. He later observed that his singing sounded like a random collection of accents but it was nevertheless very successful.

Gnarls Barkley

Gnarls Barkley is a Grammy award winning American musical collaboration between multi-instrumentalist and producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) from New York, and rapper/vocalist Cee-Lo Green (Thomas Callaway), from Atlanta.

Their first album, St. Elsewhere, was released in 2006; it and their first hit, "Crazy", were major commercial successes, and were noted for their large sales by download. The duo released their second album, The Odd Couple, in March of 2008. Cee-Lo first entered the scene as part of the Atlanta hip hop group Goodie Mob which had a large hand in the Dirty South Movement of the 1990s. Cee-Lo left the group after their third album in 1999 and started his solo career.

He released two solo albums, one in 2002, and one in 2004. Danger Mouse has produced for a number of hip-hop artists, and he produced Gorillaz' Grammy winning album Demon Days. He received national attention for his mash-up Grey Album, which blended samples from Jay-Z's The Black Album and the Beatles' White Album. They first met in 2003 when Thomas Callaway was on a tour for which Danger Mouse happened to be the DJ. They began working together on the songs that would become the St. Elsewhere album; prior to the release of that album they collaborated on the songs "What You Sittin' On?" for Lex Records in 2004, and "Benzie Box" from the Dangerdoom album The Mouse and the Mask in 2005...

Gene Loves Jezebel

Gene Loves Jezebel is a gothic rock band from the early 1980s founded by twin brothers, Michael and Jay Aston (born John Peter Aston). Originally called Slav Aryan, Gene Loves Jezebel began in 1980 with the Aston brothers, guitarist Ian Hudson and a drum machine. The Astons grew up in Porthcawl, Wales, making the move to London in 1981. With a new home, and shortly thereafter, the new name, the trio played several live shows and were signed by Situation Two. In May 1982, the label released Gene Loves Jezebel's demo single Shaving My Neck. The band then added bassist Julianne Regan followed, briefly, by a keyboardist, Jean-Marc Lederman.

Regan left within a year to form All About Eve, leaving Ian Hudson briefly playing bass until Stephen Marshall joined. This line up went on to perform some 100 gigs and recorded the first album Promise, along with their first John Peel Session and the beautifully bizarre B-side Stephen, often considered to be an homage to the man himself. Peter Rizzo joined in 1984. Gene Loves Jezebel underwent a dozen or so line up changes between 1981-1985.
The band released two more singles in 1983 before Promise peaked at number 8 in the UK Indie Chart. In 1984, the group recorded a John Peel radio session for BBC and toured America with fellow Welsh artist John Cale. The second album, Immigrant, was released in mid-1985. However, during an agonizing American tour for Immigrant, founding member Ian Hudson left the band and was replaced by former Generation X and Chelsea guitarist James Stevenson (who later also played rhythm guitar on tour with The Cult). During 1986, the group moved its contract to Situation Two's parent company, Beggar's Banquet Records and distribution rights in USA to Geffen Records. The subsequent promotion increased pop-chart success for the group. The single Sweetest Thing briefly hit the Top 75 in UK and the album Discover reached number 32 in UK Albums Chart. At this time, the group also found heavy rotation on college and countercultural radio stations across America. The band had slowly turned their attention to dance music. The slick and catchy guitar hooks of singles Desire and Heartache leapt to #6 and #72, respectively, on Los Angeles' New Wave station, KROQ. Later that year, former Spear of Destiny member Chris Bell became the band's fifth drummer.

Everything But The Girl

Everything but the Girl (EBTG) are a two-person English band formed in Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer and sometime-guitarist Tracey Thorn (born September 26, 1962) and guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist Ben Watt (born December 6, 1962).

Watt and Thorn are also a couple; they are intensely private about their relationship and personal life. It was not a publicised fact for some time that they were a couple, or that they had subsequently married. The duo have a strong desire to raise their three children outside of the spotlight. When Thorn and Watt met, their paths were very similar; they were both attending the University of Hull, and both had signed to independent record label Cherry Red Records as solo artists. Thorn was also a member of the trio Marine Girls, and Watt contributed a photograph to the cover of their first album, Lazy Ways. The pair each had solo album releases through Cherry Red Records: Thorn’s 1982 L.P. was A Distant Shore, an eight-track mini-album. Watt’s L.P. was entitled North Marine Drive.
They formed a duo and took their unusual name "Everything but the Girl" from the slogan of well-known Hull shop, 'Turners' Furniture', on Beverley Road (left). Earlier, this was a line from the 1937 film Daughter of Shanghai, in reference to a bungled murder and theft of evidence: 'Did you get it?' 'Everything.' 'Everything but the girl!'

Everlast

Erik Schrody (born August 18, 1969, in Valley Stream, New York), better known by his stage name Everlast, is an Irish-American rapper and singer-songwriter, best known for his hit "What It's Like", and for his genre-crossing mix of hip-hop and acoustic-based rock music.

He was the frontman for rap group House of Pain until 1996. In 2000, he won a Grammy for best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal with latin rock musician Carlos Santana for "Put Your Lights On."
Emerging as a member of the Rhyme Syndicate, Everlast's first solo album Forever Everlasting (1990) which was largely made possible by emcee Ice T failed both critically and commercially. Following the album's flop, Everlast formed House of Pain with friends DJ Lethal and Danny Boy. Signed to Tommy Boy Records, the group's 1992 eponymous debut album went multi-platinum with the hit single "Jump Around." The group eventually disbanded in 1996, and Everlast once again pursued a solo career. Everlast's second solo album Whitey Ford Sings the Blues (1998) which was released a full eight years after his solo debut and after he had a major heart attack was both a commercial and critical success (selling more than 3 million copies). Whitey Ford Sings the Blues was hailed for its blend of rap with acoustic and electric guitars, developed by Everlast together with producers Dante Ross and John Gamble (aka SD50). The album's lead single "What It's Like" proved to be his most popular and successful song, although the follow up single, "Ends", also reached the rock top 10.

Eskobar

Eskobar is the name of a Swedish indie/pop band that was founded in 1996 some 30 kilometres north of Stockholm, in the small town of Åkersberga. The band features Daniel Bellqvist as its lead singer, Frederik Zäll on guitars, and Robert Birming on drums.

Eskobar has its roots in the early 1990s when Daniel Bellqvist left his band to join Frederik Zäll’s band called FOF (an acronym for "Fish Or Fantasy?") in 1994. The two musicians had previously met in their high school band class. In their incarnation as FOF, Daniel played bass while Frederik played guitar, and since Grunge was the popular musical style of the time, the band settled on this genre as their signature style. During this time the band also changed its name to Cripplefish.
In less than a year, Cripplefish's sound began to evolve from Grunge into Pop, prompting the lead singer, Staffan Atling, to leave the band. This shift in genre style led to a significant reformulation of the band. Cripplefish was renamed, this time taking the name The Bugs, but without a lead singer, Daniel was forced to pick up the slack on vocals while playing bass. Another reshuffling of the band's lineup brought in Robert Birming as drummer and Jojjo, the band’s only female member, was brought on as The Bugs' acoustic guitarist and backup vocalist.
