Radio 4

Radio 4 is a band from Brooklyn who formed in 1999. They claim that their sound, which has been described as "danceable punk," is "made in New York, is about New York, and sounds like New York".

The band was a five-piece, comprising Anthony Roman (Vocals/Bass) (formerly of Garden Variety), David Milone (Vocals/Guitar) (who replaced original guitarist/singer Tommy Williams in 2005), Gerard Garone (Keyboards), Greg Collins (Drums), and P.J. O'Connor (Percussion) until april 2008 when Gerard Garone left the band. The band was originally a trio, comprising Anthony Roman, Tommy Williams and Greg Collins. They cite a variety of influences, including Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, Primal Scream and Zero Zero, though their lively punk sound combined with their militant political stance inevitably draws a strong comparison with The Clash. Their name comes from a Public Image Ltd. song from that group's second album.

Peaches

Merrill Beth Nisker (born 1968 in Toronto, Ontario), better known as Peaches, is an electronica musician whose songs are notable for their use of sexual imagery. She is currently living in Berlin.

History
Before she became Peaches, Nisker was an elementary school music and drama teacher. She plays almost all the instruments for her songs, programs her own electronic beats and produces her records. She released her first album, Fancypants Hoodlum, under the name Merrill Nisker in 1995, and subsequently developed the style and persona that would take her to international fame as Peaches. In Toronto before rising to fame, she was the roommate of fellow recording artist Feist. Her songs have been featured in movies such as Mean Girls, Waiting..., Jackass Number Two, My Little Eye, and Lost in Translation. Her music has also been featured on television shows such as Showtime's The L Word and Ugly Betty, and has been used for the promotion of Dirt. Peaches performed guest vocals on Pink's album Try This, on the song "Oh My God," and on the Chicks on Speed album 99 Cents, on the song "We Don't Play Guitars." For her fourth album, 2006's Impeach My Bush, Peaches enlisted guest musicians Joan Jett, Greg Kurstin, Josh Homme, Samantha Maloney, Beth Ditto, Feist, Dave Catching, Brian O'Connor and Radio Sloan to perform on several of the tracks. The Herms (short for hermaphrodites) were formed in spring 2006 as Peaches' live backing band. They played at small and large venues alike with sex and sex related themes as the "shock factor" for the audience. "Herms" is a reference to 70's duo Peaches & Herb and blending of words her and him. Peaches and Herms was the opening act for Nine Inch Nails and Bauhaus during the second half of their 2006 summer U.S. tour. Peaches played two shows in New Zealand in September 2008 with Germany based band Sweet Machine. Her sold out show at San Francisco Bath House in Wellington featured several songs from her forthcoming album I Feel Cream, including opening number "Showstopper" and the tender "Lose You" which took the artist in a softer direction than many of her fans may be used to seeing. Peaches played live at the Parklife Festival in Australia, October 2008, and performed a DJ set at the Parklife after party (Afterlife) at the Met Nightclub in Brisbane on the October 4. Her new album, I Feel Cream, will be released on May 4th in Europe and May 5th in North America. The first single from the project is a double a-side of Talk To Me and More.

Out Hud

Out Hud was an electronic band formed in 1996 in the Bay Area of California and later based in New York City. The band consisted of guitarist Nic Offer, bassist Tyler Pope, cellist Molly Schnick, vocalist/drummer Phyllis Forbes and mixer Justin Van Der Volgen.

Pope, Offer, and Van Der Volgen are also members of the similar band, !!!. Their first album, S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D. was instrumental. For their second album, Let Us Never Speak Of It Again, the group added vocals to their music, with Forbes singing lead while a drum machine filled in her usual role, assisted with Schnick on backing vocals. Shortly after the release of their second album it was announced that Pope would not be joining the band on tour, and instead would be concentrating on James Murphy's dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem. It was then announced in September 2005 that a concert in New York might be their last show. Molly Schnick is working with Rafael Cohen, formerly of Supersystem, on an unknown project. The song "How Long" was featured in the movie I Know Who Killed Me starring Lindsay Lohan.

Les Savy Fav

Les Savy Fav is a New York City indie rock band. Their style is influenced by art rock. The group is known for the explicit stage presence of their lead singer Tim Harrington.

The group's original line-up, formed in 1995, all met while attending the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island. Live shows are punctuated by the antics of frontman Harrington, including kissing multiple audience members and on-stage wardrobe changes. The rest of the band continues to play as if nothing out of the ordinary is happening. Guitar player Gibb Slife soon left the band after their debut. Drummer Mahoney was replaced by Harrison Haynes. The band started a planned hiatus in mid-2005, which led to speculation that they might have broken up, but lead Harrington confirmed that Les Savy Fav would return, & indeed they did, playing a live performance at the British All Tomorrow's Parties festival in May 2007. The band booked studio time in November 2006 to record their fourth full length, Let's Stay Friends, which was released September 18, 2007. The band is running a video contest on YouTube for "The Equestrian," a song from their new album. Andrew Reuland joined the band in 2006 as the second guitar player. The band performed "Patty Lee" live on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on January 31, 2008. Their song "Hold Onto Your Genre" is featured in the soundtrack to MLB 2K7, as well as commercials for the game. Bass player Syd Butler is also the owner of French Kiss Records. Seth Jabour is also known for his work as an illustrator and graphic designer. Former drummer Pat Mahoney plays currently in LCD Soundsystem. The Derry/London based band Jetplane Landing included a song on their 2007 album Backlash Cop entitled "Why Do They Never Play Les Savy Fav On The Radio?"
Music Style
Initially their music featured an abrasive sound fitting in the noise rock genre and reminiscent of the music of Fugazi. Later on their music became more idiosyncratic shifting to a more radio friendly sound more closely to the sound of befriended bands Bloc Party and Enon. Members of the latter band contributed to several tracks of the band.

Le Tigre

Le Tigre is an American dance-punk band, formed by Kathleen Hanna (formerly of Bikini Kill) and Johanna Fateman in 1998. It also featured Sadie Benning from 1998 until 2001, and JD Samson for the rest of the group's run. Le Tigre is known for its socio-political lyrics, dealing with issues of feminism and the LGBT community. The band is currently on hiatus.

In 2006, Le Tigre contributed to Yoko Ono's Yes, I'm A Witch album by remixing "Sisters O Sisters". Le Tigre licensed two of their songs for use in advertisements by Canadian telephone provider Telus and Australian jewellery chain Goldmark. A sample from "Deceptacon" (one letter changed from Decepticon) plays in the background of a 2006 television commercial for Nivea cosmetics. The song is featured in the 2006 Norwegian film Reprise during its comical party scene. Le Tigre's "TKO" is featured in the 2006 movie Accepted, as well as on FOX's Teen Drama The OC in Season 2, and The CW's Teen Drama One Tree Hill in Season 3. The Boston Red Sox radio broadcast often uses a sample of "Deceptacon", the first song on Le Tigre's debut album, as filler when returning from commercial break. The song was also featured in the Girl Skateboard Company's film Yeah Right! (playing during Rick McCrank's skateboarding segment), the freestyle ski film Teddybear Crisis, and Robot Food's Snowboard film Afterbang, thus elevating it to cult status among skateboarders, freestyle skiers, snowboarders, and the like. Many of their songs feature prominently in the 2007 film Itty Bitty Titty Committee.

Hot Hot Heat

Hot Hot Heat is a rock band from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The band currently is composed of Steve Bays (vocals and keyboards), Paul Hawley (drums), Dustin Hawthorne (bass) and Luke Paquin (guitar). Hawthorne and Bays had been in many different bands together since 1995 and met Hawley in 1998. In 1999, Hawley bought a Juno 6 keyboard and asked Bays to try playing it, as no one else knew how. Hawley took over the drums from Bays and Hawthorne played bass.

Matthew Marnik, who was a friend of the band, sang vocals. The band's original sound can be considered synthpunk.
The band soon changed direction to a more melodic, pop-influenced style, losing Marnik and adding guitarist Dante DeCaro. Strongly influenced by the New Wave sound of 1980s bands XTC, The Clash, and Elvis Costello and the Attractions, the new lineup, with Steve on vocals, quickly released a series of 7" singles and toured extensively in Canada and the American Pacific Northwest, joining up with similarly-styled indie rock bands such as Les Savy Fav, The French Kicks, Radio 4, Ima Robot, and Pretty Girls Make Graves, and opening for established Canadian rockers Sloan on a national tour.

Hercules & Love Affair

Hercules and Love Affair is a musical project from New York based DJ Andy Butler. Members include Nomi Ruiz, Kim Ann Foxman & Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony & The Johnsons). It is signed to DFA Records. Their single "Blind" was released on 3 March, 2008, and their debut album (produced by Butler and Tim Goldsworthy) was released on 10 March. Their self titled album has been critically well received & charted in the top 40 in several countries.

The band's central figure, Andrew Butler, began his musical career at 15, DJing in a Denver leather bar run by a hostess called Chocolate Thunder Pussy. He then moved to Brooklyn, in order to attend Sarah Lawrence College. According to Butler: "I’ve been writing songs since childhood. I made music for dance performances in college (where he studied under Martin Goldray), like a remake of Gino Soccio’s ‘Runaway’ done in the style of Kraftwerk."
The band made their live debut on May 17 2008, at the Studio B venue in Brooklyn, New York, before going on a European and North American tour. Their song "Blind" was awarded Best Song of 2008 by Pitchfork Media.

Death From Above 1979

Death from Above 1979 was a Toronto based Canadian dance-punk duo. The members were Jesse F. Keeler on bass, synths, backing vocals and Sebastien Grainger on vocals, drums. Without the help of a lead guitarist they played loud,

Heavy metal influenced, dance-punk on a bass and drums combination. They were signed to Last Gang Records in Canada, Vice Recordings in the U.S. and 679 Recordings in the UK. Although they reportedly met at a Sonic Youth concert, Keeler and Grainger sometimes jokingly claimed to have met in prison, on a pirate ship, or in a gay bar, leading some journalists and fans to believe these hoaxes. They also claimed to have lived in a funeral home at one time. In 2005, the video for "Blood On Our Hands" won a VideoFACT award at the MuchMusic Video Awards. They played "Romantic Rights" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, with Grainger standing on his chair singing and drumming for the first half of the performance and Conan's Max Weinberg on drums for the second.
On 4 August 2006 Keeler, via the band's official website, announced the duo's split.

Datarock

Datarock is a Norwegian band. The band describes their sound as "a mixture of musical styles [they] like." A trio of friends, Fredrik Saroea, Ketil Mosnes and Kevin O'Brien, conceived the group while at a festival in Bergen, and soon hired Tom Mæland. O'Brien and Mæland later left the band, but the duo of Saroea and Mosnes continued the project.

The band members list their major artistic influences as Devo, Talking Heads and the Happy Mondays. The band has released three EPs and their debut album, Datarock Datarock, was released in 2005 in 10 countries on the band's own label, YAP (Young Aspiring Professionals), receiving favourable reviews, especially in the UK. They made an appearance in Australia's Triple J Hottest 100 with the single "Computer Camp Love" in 2005, placing at #12. This song was #88 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.
Their song "Fa-Fa-Fa" will be featured in a new Coca Cola advert, and is also featured in NHL 08, FIFA 08 and NBA Live 08 as part of EA Trax. It also appears in The Sims 2: Free Time, and The Sims Video Team was asked to create a custom music video for "Fa-Fa-Fa" that can be viewed on the official The Sims2 site. Another one of their songs, "New Song" is featured in Madden 08. Finally, a remix of "I Used To Dance With My Daddy" is featured in Need For Speed: ProStreet.

CSS

CSS is a Brazilian band from São Paulo, whose songs have an electroclash sound, but they also play indie rock and synthpop songs. The band was labeled as part of the explosion of the New Rave scene. Their songs are in both English and Portuguese.

CSS is an acronym for Cansei de Ser Sexy, literally "I got tired of being sexy" in Portuguese. CSS formed in September 2003, consisting of a group of friends. Their name was taken from a reported quote by Beyoncé, who allegedly declared that she was "tired of being sexy".
The band first achieved notoriety through the Internet. Some of its members, like Adriano Cintra, had been previously known in São Paulo's underground club scene, but not outside of the local alternative subculture. Others, like Lovefoxxx, were owners of popular fotolog and flickr pages. Their collective band fotolog also gained popularity and their songs were frequently downloaded from Trama Virtual's website (a Brazilian website loosely similar to MySpace Music). Trama Virtual invested heavily in the band, inviting a series of Brazilian and British journalists to report on them. Articles were printed in several Brazilian magazines and the British newspaper The Guardian, whose reporter, Peter Culshaw, was invited to see the band playing just before their signing for the debut, at a club in São Paulo. He predicted that they "could be the biggest band ever to come out of South America". Several songs by CSS were featured in mainstream media: "Meeting Paris Hilton" was featured in the Latin American broadcasting of The Simple Life, "Superafim" was used in the Brazilian version of the Big Brother reality show, and "Computer Heat" was used in the South American version of the game The Sims 2: Nightlife, including a version in Simlish. Still without a record deal, they released two independent EPs in 2004, and played that year at TIM Festival.

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys are an English indie rock band from High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. Formed in 2002, the band currently consists of Alex Turner on lead vocals and guitar,

Jamie Cook on guitar, Matt Helders on drums and backing vocals and Nick O'Malley on bass guitar and backing vocals, who replaced Andy Nicholson. Arctic Monkeys achieved chart success with their first single, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", which reached number one in the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, released in January 2006, was at the time the fastest-selling debut album in British music history, surpassing Oasis' Definitely Maybe. It remains the fastest-selling debut album for a group. It received critical acclaim, winning both the 2006 Mercury Prize and the 2007 BRIT Award for Best British Album. The band's second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, was released on 23 April 2007, sold over 225,000 copies in its debut week, and was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize. The group also picked up the award for Best British Album and Best British Group at the BRIT Awards in 2008.
Arctic Monkeys achieved their success through fan-made demo tapes and online file sharing. They were heralded as one of the first acts to come to the public attention via the Internet, with commentators suggesting they represented the possibility of a change in the way in which new bands are promoted and marketed. The band eventually signed to the independent record.
