Woods - Songs of Shame 2009

Woods are on Woodsist Records, the NYC-based label that has also recently issued records by Vivian Girls, Wavves, Crystal Stilts, and Sic Alps. But unlike those groups, they focus on a more pastoral and rustic vein of songcraft rather than loft-ready noise. Here on their latest full-length, their music evokes any number of their lo-fi ancestors, from early Guided by Voices to the murkier depths of the Siltbreeze or Flying Nun back catalogs. But Woods are able to retain their own immediately recognizable off-kilter character, with music that's private and homespun but also accessible and immediately enjoyable.

Japandroids - Post-Nothing 2009

Due to their two-man setup and no-frills recording, Vancouver's Japandroids risk being lumped in with the no-fi/noise-pop scene (No Age, Wavves) that finds bands using distortion to tear through the fabric of the medium. But they're coming from somewhere else, sonically and emotionally. What makes Post-Nothing such a thrill is the manner in which these guys hold absolutely nothing back. They make terminally catchy music played with punk's enthusiasm and velocity that, perhaps because there are only two dudes in this band, makes you feel like joining in to bash along. And as contagious as any of the lyrics, melodies, riffs, or drum fills are, their energy and lack of self-consciousness is every bit as equally lovable. The album was given an 8.3 by music website Pitchfork and included in its "Best New Music" section. It has an overall score of 90% ("Universal acclaim") on Metacritic.

Sunn O - Monoliths and Dimensions 2009

Sunn O's latest album may be their best, as dozens of collaborators join on four epic tracks that run from slow metal to shimmering orchestral drone. Here they exploit a newfound spaciousness and elegance, folding in horns, strings, harp, light percussion, and voices while losing none of their visceral power. Per their long-standing dogma, "Maximum volume yields maximum results." But this time, there's enough musical range and temperance to usher even the most resolute naysayer into this intricate wonderland.

Shed Seven

Shed Seven are an English indie rock band from York and were one of the groups which contributed to the Britpop music scene that evolved during the 1990s, yet never received the degree of mainstream success achieved by bands such as Oasis and Blur.

They formed in 1990 and originally comprised Rick Witter (vocals), Joe Johnson (guitar and keyboards, later replaced by Paul Banks), Tom Gladwin (bass) and Alan Leach (drums). They belonged to the post-Smiths wave of UK musicians such as The Sundays and Marion, with a sound relying heavily on complex guitar arpeggios in a minor or tonic key and wailing vocals. At the height of their popularity between 1994 and 1999 they had thirteen Top 40 singles and four Top 20 albums in the UK. The band officially broke up in 2003, but announced their reformation for a greatest hits tour in July 2007.

Shades Apart

Shades Apart were an alternative rock musical group from Bridgewater, New Jersey. They are best known for their US radio hit "Valentine". The band formed in 1988, self-releasing an album that year; two EPs followed in 1992 and 1993.

1995's full-length, Save It, produced by Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton, resulted in some media exposure due to the success of their cover of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love". After another independent release in 1997, the band signed to Universal, who released Eyewitness in 1999 and Sonic Boom in 2001. In 1999, the single "Valentine" peaked at #31 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Their song "Stranger By The Day" featured in the film American Pie and is on the soundtrack. The band has since broken up, though a reunion show was given in 2006 in Bound Brook, New Jersey.

Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols are an English punk rock band that formed in London in 1975. The Sex Pistols are responsible for initiating the punk movement in the United Kingdom and inspiring many later punk and alternative rock musicians.

Although their initial career lasted just two-and-a-half years and produced only four singles and one studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, they are regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of popular music. The Sex Pistols originally comprised vocalist Johnny Rotten, guitarist Steve Jones, drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock. Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious in early 1977. Under the management of impresario Malcolm McLaren, the band created controversies which captivated Britain. Their concerts repeatedly faced difficulties with organisers and authorities and public appearances often ended in mayhem. Their 1977 single "God Save the Queen", attacking Britons' social conformity and deference to the crown, precipitated the "last and greatest outbreak of pop-based moral pandemonium". In January 1978, at the end of a turbulent US tour, Rotten left the band and announced its breakup. Over the next several months, the three other band members recorded songs for McLaren's film version of the Sex Pistols' story, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979. In 1996, Rotten, Jones, Cook and Matlock reunited for the Filthy Lucre Tour; since 2002, they have staged further reunion shows and tours. On 24 February 2006, the Sex Pistols were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but they refused to attend the ceremony, calling the museum "a piss stain".

Serge Gainsbourg

Serge Gainsbourg (2 April 1928 – 2 March 1991) was a French singer-songwriter, actor and director. Gainsbourg's varied musical style and individuality made him difficult to categorize. His legacy has been firmly established, and he is often regarded as one of the world's most influential musicians.

Biography
Personal life
He was born Lucien Ginsburg in Paris, France, the son of Russian Jewish parents, Joseph Ginsburg (1896 - 22 April 1971) and Olga Bessman (1894 - 16 March 1985), who fled to France after the 1917 Bolshevik uprising. His childhood was profoundly affected by the occupation of France by Nazi Germany, during which he and his family, as Jews, were forced to wear the yellow star and eventually flee Paris. Before he was 30 years old, Gainsbourg was a disillusioned painter but earned his living as a piano player in bars.

Sebastien Tellier (born 1975 in Paris) is a French singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is currently signed to Record Makers, a French independent record label. He sings in English, French and Italian.

Tellier's first album, L'incroyable Verite (The Incredible Truth), was released in 2001. Tellier went on tour with Air in support of the album and was joined on stage by world-renowned theremin player Pamelia Kurstin. L'incroyable Verite is a pop album featuring styles from lo-fi electronica to bizarre cabaret tunes. Its sleeve featured Tellier in full evening dress on the front, while the back of jacket had a shot of him cavorting in a playboy's pool. He instructed listeners only to listen to the album by candle light. The track, "Fantino", was chosen by Sofia Coppola for the soundtrack to her 2003 film Lost in Translation.

Sebadoh

Sebadoh is an indie rock band formed in Westfield, Massachusetts by Eric Gaffney and Dinosaur Jr bass player Lou Barlow.

Along with such bands as Pavement and Guided by Voices, Sebadoh helped pioneer lo-fi music, a style of indie rock characterized by low-fidelity recording techniques, often on four-track machines. The band's early output, such as 1990's Weed Forestin' and 1991's Sebadoh III, was typical of this style, and wavered between Barlow's wry, introspective folk and Gaffney's psychedelic noise-rock experiments.

Seachange

Seachange were a band from Nottingham, United Kingdom. They play a mixture of melodic folk and pop with a strong influence of '90s alternative rock.

They are the first British band to be taken on the roster of American indie-label Matador Records within five years. In Europe they are signed to Glitterhouse Records. In late March 2007, eight years after their inception, the band announced their decision to split, citing external pressures and increasing involvement with other projects. Also mentioned was the fact that Daniel, David, Neil and Simon would continue working together on a new project under a new name (as yet unannounced). A final EP was expected in 2007, however as of 2008 it has not been released.

The Sea and Cake

The Sea and Cake is a pop/rock group with a pronounced jazz influence, which formed in the mid-90s in Chicago, Illinois out of the ashes of renowned local bands The Coctails and Shrimp Boat.

The group's name came from a willful reinterpretation (in the wake of an accidental miscomprehension) of "The C in Cake", a song by Gastr del Sol. Along with Shrimp Boat and The Coctails, groups related to The Sea and Cake include Tortoise and Gastr del Sol. Starting with 1997's The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire essentially plays only drums in The Sea and Cake. Members Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt each have released solo albums. The cover art of The Sea And Cake's releases are largely paintings by Eric Claridge and photographs by Prekop. (Postcards of some of the One Bedroom-era photos were sold on the band's 2003 tour.) Prewitt has been involved in publishing his own comic books and doing graphic design. The band was on hiatus from 2004 to 2007, returning with Everybody. The band's most recent album, Car Alarm, was released in October 2008.

Screamin Jay Hawkins

Jalacy Hawkins, best known as Screamin' Jay Hawkins (July 18, 1929 – February 12, 2000) was an African-American musician, singer, and actor. Famed chiefly for his powerful, operatic vocal delivery and wildly theatrical performances of songs such as "I Put a Spell on You" and "Constipation Blues," Hawkins sometimes used macabre props onstage, making him perhaps the first shock rocker.

Weiland supported the record with an early 2009 tour of the United States. He is well-known for his flamboyant and energetic onstage persona and for constantly changing his appearance and vocal style. Sally Shapiro

Sally Shapiro is the pseudonym of a Swedish singer, whose music is influenced by Eurobeat and Italo Disco. She grew up listening to Swedish pop and disco.

Sally Shapiro's debut album, 2007's Disco Romance, was produced by Johan Agebjörn. The album received strong reviews, and Shapiro has recently been championed by many prominent music blogs including Pitchfork Media. Shapiro is notable for shunning publicity; she has never performed live, given real-life interviews or revealed her real name. However, in an interview with Swedish webzine Judy in September 2007, she talked for the first time about considering performing live. What if I did a show in Italy, where there's no-one I know. If I just went onto the stage, did my thing and left without having any further contact if I didn't want to. Then I'd still be able to keep myself outside of it and just regard it as Sally's thing. Agebjorn shed some light on the choice of the fictional stage name in an October 2007 interview with Exclaim! Magazine. I chose Sally Shapiro because we were inspired by artists like Valerie Dore and Katy Gray, who also had a team of producers and writers behind them using the name of a singer as the title for the project” Sally Shapiro's album Disco Romance was released in North America October 16, 2007 on Canadian based indie label Paper Bag Records. It is a 10 song album, 3 of the songs will be new and exclusive to this new version: Jackie Jackie, Skating in the Moonshine and He Keeps Me Alive. The album also features new artwork by Canadian designer, Geoff Wilson. On April 15, 2008, Sally Shapiro's remix album Remix Romance Vol. 1 was released worldwide by Paper Bag Records. Some of the names on this remix album are Junior Boys, Jon Brooks, Lindstrom, Juan Maclean. Quickly following Vol. 1, Remix Romance Vol. 2 was released on June 17, 2008. It contains remixes by Dntel, The Russian Futurists, Solvent and Alexander Robotnick. This volume is only available as a download, for now.

Three albums and five years later, Adams went solo, releasing Heartbreaker in 2000. A longtime resident of New York City, Adams is probably best known for his song "New York, New York", which appeared on his 2001 release Gold. He has since released five more solo albums and three albums with his band, The Cardinals. His most recent album, Cardinology, was released on October 28, 2008. Rusted Root

Rusted Root is a band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania known for their fusion of Grateful Dead style bluegrass rock with a strong percussion section that draws from African, Latin American, Native American, Indian influences.

Rusted Root is often lumped together with other bands under the jam band label, though they have somewhat rejected this categorization. Rusted Root formed in 1988 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and made its indie record debut in 1992 with Cruel Sun, which was rereleased in 2002. The group's major-label debut album was 1994's When I Woke, a hit on college radio and a platinum record. The album hit the top 40 in early 1995, peaking at #33. Along with their inspiring live shows, Rusted Root began working on contributions to the movies Twister and Home for the Holidays. Their next studio album was Remember (1996), followed by Rusted Root (1998) and Welcome to My Party (2002). Welcome to My Party was criticized by fans, who are affectionately known as Rootheads. Many felt the band's departure from tribal grooves to a poppier feel was an attempt to sell out. Remember reached the Top 40 in the US, while Rusted Root found its sales buoyed by the use of the band's cover of the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" on an episode of Ally McBeal. A live double album followed in 2004. Its greatest-hits album was released in April 2005 as part of Universal Music's 20th Century Masters series. The band has released three EPs, Evil Ways, Airplane, and Live, which came packaged with a documentary video cassette.

Rush

Rush is a Canadian rock band originally formed in August 1968, in the Willowdale neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, composed of bassist, keyboardist, and lead vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer and lyricist Neil Peart.

The band and its membership went through a number of re-configurations between 1968 and 1974, achieving their current form when Peart replaced original drummer John Rutsey in July 1974, two weeks before the group's first U.S. tour. Since the release of the band's self-titled debut album in March 1974, Rush has become known for the instrumental skills of its members, complex compositions, and eclectic lyrical motifs drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and libertarian philosophy, as well as addressing humanitarian, social, emotional, and environmental concerns. Musically, Rush's style has evolved over the years, beginning in the vein of blues-inspired heavy metal on their first albums, then encompassing hard rock, progressive rock, and a period dominated by synthesizers. They have influenced various musical artists, including Metallica, The Smashing Pumpkins and Primus, as well as progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater and Symphony X.

Roy Davis, Jr.

Roy Davis Jr. is a professional recording artist specializing in house music on the Ubiquity record label. Davis grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and was turned on to house music at an early age by house pioneer Lil' Louis.

Davis began his own production company named Phuture in the late 1980s. In the 1990s Davis teamed with Chicago vocalist Peven Everett and recorded the hit single, "Gabriel" (Large/XL). The track garnered large amounts of airplay in radios and nightclubs all around the world. The single sold over 250,000 copies, and has appeared on dozens of compilation albums including Desert Island Mix from Gilles Peterson. The song drove Davis into his current artistic direction of soulful & spiritual house music. Davis was also a member of the acid-house group Phuture during the 1990s. Roy describes his style as “Soul Electrica,” a hybrid of soul and electronic music. He was introduced to dance music by late 1980’s legends as DJ Pierre, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Marshall Jefferson, and Lil’ Louis. “I’ve always been in to Music but these were the DJs that really inspired me. Lil’ Louis was always my favorite DJ because he knew how to play it all, from mellow, club, classics, he was so diverse – he taught me how to mix it up, that’s how I got my style,” says Davis Jr. “ I started DJing myself when I was 12 or 13, spinning break dance music, Italian disco, then house.” The turning point for Roy Davis Jr. was in 1993. While in college he was asked to work as and A+R scout for Strictly Rhythm in NYC. He went out to the East Coast weekly, and was subsequently hired to start his own sub-label called Red Cat records.

Roxy Music

Roxy Music are an English art rock group founded in the early 1970s by art school graduate Bryan Ferry (vocals and keyboards). The other members are Phil Manzanera (guitars), Andy Mackay (saxophone and oboe) and Paul Thompson (drums and percussion).

Former members include Brian Eno (synthesizer and "treatments"), and Eno's replacement Eddie Jobson (synthesizer and violin). Although the band broke up in 1983, they reunited for a concert tour in 2001, and have announced that they are recording a new album for a yet-to-be-confirmed release date. Roxy Music attained mainstream popular and critical success in the UK and Europe through the 1970s and early 1980s, beginning with their Top 10 debut album, Roxy Music, in 1972. The band proved to be a significant influence on the early English punk movement, as well as providing a model for many New Wave acts and the experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s. Ferry and co-founding member Eno have also had broadly influential solo careers, the latter emerging as one of the most significant record producers of the late 20th century, with credits including landmark albums by Devo, Talking Heads, U2 and Coldplay. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Roxy Music #98 on its "100 The Greatest Artists of All Time" list.

Ronny

Biography: Ronny used to be a Top French Model. Ronny was brought up in the grim Northern industrial area of France and left home at 14 to go to Paris, there lying about her age and doing terrible jobs.

Took dancin classes and jobs then stopped everything and started to write songs. Club entrepreneur Rusty Egan met Ronny in the Paris club Privelege and co-produced with Midge Ure her best release, Vangelis, Georg Kajanus and Peter Godwin also produced for her. Ronny, a masculine name, is the blitz girl who loved to dress up as a boy and also appear on the Ultravox 'Station' record sleeve." "Is it a man? Is it a woman? No, this is Ronny, a French singer who briefly worked with Vangelis, another one of those peculiar one-off collaborations Vangelis has from time to time. She experienced her proverbial “15 minutes of fame” during 1981/1982, when she released three solo-singles, did some concerts and worked with a number of other New Wave acts. For example, she also did vocals on a Zaine Griff track on the “What, Me Worry?” album (on"This Strange Obsession" ) by Yukihiro Takahashi, of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame. The second of those singles, Compare me with the rest, was composed and produced by Vangelis. How this brief partnership originated is unknown, maybe it was because she too recorded for Polydor. Her being French would have helped as well interestingly, she gave the same reason as Vangelis did some years earlier for leaving France to try her luck in England: the unresponsive atmosphere of the French music-world at the time. That and her striking “woman in men’s clothes” image will have something to do with the lyrics to “Compare Me With The Rest”."

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in 1962 in London when multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones and pianist Ian Stewart were joined by vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards.

Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early lineup. Stewart, deemed unsuitable as a teen idol, was removed from the official lineup in 1963 but continued to work with the band as road manager and keyboardist until his death in 1985. Early in the band's history Jagger and Richards formed a songwriting partnership and gradually took over leadership of the band from the increasingly troubled and erratic Jones. At first the group recorded mainly covers of American blues and R&B songs, but since the 1966 album Aftermath, their releases have mainly featured Jagger/Richards songs. Mick Taylor replaced an incapacitated Jones shortly before Jones's death in 1969. Taylor quit in 1974, and was replaced in 1975 by Faces guitarist Ronnie Wood, who has remained with the band ever since. Wyman left the Rolling Stones in 1992; bassist Darryl Jones, who is not an official band member, has worked with the group since 1994. First popular in the UK and Europe, The Rolling Stones came to the US during the early 1960s "British Invasion". The Rolling Stones have released 22 studio albums in the UK (24 in the US), eight concert albums (nine in the US) and numerous compilations; and have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide. Sticky Fingers (1971) began a string of eight consecutive studio albums that charted at number one in the United States. Their latest album, A Bigger Bang, was released in 2005. In 1989 The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2004 they were ranked number 4 in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Their image of unkempt and surly youth is one that many musicians still emulate.
